The Dunelm rib-knit, the Cox & Cox velvet, and the Etsy linens we’d actually buy.
A cushion is the single cheapest way to change a room. £20-40 buys you a new texture, a new colour, a slightly different mood — and at that price you can rotate seasonally without flinching.
We’ve gone through the neutral cushion range — warm beige through to oat and mocha — from every retailer we trust, and these are the 15 we’d actually buy. All under £40.

TL;DR
- For texture variety: the Dunelm rib-knit (£12) and Cox & Cox bouclé (£35)
- For luxe-feeling at low cost: the H&M Home velvet (£18) — genuinely the bargain of the list
- For one statement cushion: the Etsy hand-loomed linen (£28-38)
- All are 50×50cm — the right size for a sofa
How we judged them
Every cushion was rated on:
- Colour fidelity — does the photo match the real thing?
- Texture — does it feel premium under the hand or scratchy/synthetic?
- Price-to-quality — is it overpriced for what it is?
- Cover-and-insert combo — covers-only need feather-mix inserts (separate purchase)
Cushion covers are noted as “cover only” — you’ll need 50×50cm feather-mix inserts from Dunelm (£8 each) to plump them properly.
The textured cushions
1. Dunelm Chunky Rib-Knit Cushion — Dunelm — £12
Dunelm Chunky Rib-Knit Cushion. The £12 entry point. Cream rib-knit, 50×50cm, cover only. The knit is loose enough to feel handmade, tight enough not to snag. Pairs with absolutely everything in the warm-nude palette.
2. Cox & Cox Bouclé Cushion — Cox & Cox — £35
Cox & Cox Bouclé Cushion. The bouclé that finally got bouclé right. Warm taupe, dense looped weave, substantial-feeling. Includes a feather insert. Read this one as the “investment” cushion — buy one, build the rest of the sofa around it.
3. H&M Home Velvet Cushion — H&M Home — £18
H&M Home Velvet Cushion. Genuinely the bargain of the list. Mocha-brown velvet that reads as substantially more expensive than £18. Cover only. Slight pile direction shows after a few weeks of use, but in a good way.
4. Soak & Sleep Linen Cushion — Soak & Sleep — £32
Soak & Sleep Linen Cushion. Pre-washed linen, soft from the first day (no scratchy break-in period). Oatmeal colour. Cover only. The linen comes from Belgian flax — good sustainability story without the premium markup of The White Company.
5. John Lewis Croft Collection Wool Cushion — John Lewis — £35
John Lewis Croft Collection Wool Cushion. Cream wool with subtle herringbone weave. Slightly heavier than synthetic options. Includes the insert. The herringbone reads as quietly traditional — works in period flats especially.
6. M&S Faux-Fur Cushion — Marks & Spencer — £25
M&S Faux-Fur Cushion. Cream faux-fur, short pile (not the long-shed variety). Cover only. Surprisingly machine-washable. The cushion that earns its keep in November.
The pattern + texture combos
7. Habitat Tassel-Edge Linen Cushion — Habitat — £28
Habitat Tassel-Edge Linen Cushion. Beige linen with cream tassels along one edge. Includes insert. The tassels read as Mediterranean-summer rather than English-cosy — works better in spring/summer than winter, which is fine.
8. Etsy Hand-Loomed Stripe Cushion — Etsy — £28-38
Etsy Hand-Loomed Stripe Cushion. Search Etsy for “hand-loomed cushion warm beige” and the £28-38 range yields beautiful one-of-a-kind pieces from small independent weavers. Often cotton-wool blend. Cover only. The single piece that makes the whole sofa look intentional.
9. Cox & Cox Mocha Stripe Cushion — Cox & Cox — £30
Cox & Cox Mocha Stripe Cushion. Mocha-and-cream subtle pinstripe. Linen-blend. Includes insert. Pairs naturally with #2 (the bouclé) — three on a sofa: bouclé, stripe, plain linen.
10. Etsy Vintage Kantha Cushion — Etsy — £18-28
Etsy Vintage Kantha Cushion. Hand-stitched kantha cushions in warm-tone vintage cottons. Slight irregularity in the stitching is the whole point. £18-28 covers most listings. One per sofa is plenty — they’re statement pieces.

The shape variations
11. Dunelm Lumbar Bolster Cushion — Dunelm — £18
Dunelm Lumbar Bolster Cushion. Long rectangular bolster (50×30cm), cream linen-look. Includes insert. Lives at the back of the sofa as a lumbar support. The single piece that does the most for actual comfort vs decoration.
12. The White Company Cylinder Bolster — The White Company — £40
The White Company Cylinder Bolster. Cylindrical (45×20cm). Pre-washed cream linen with feather insert. £40 is at the top of our brief but the only cylindrical bolster we trust under £60. One per bed, one per sofa, and the room is finished.
13. Cox & Cox Square Velvet Cushion — Cox & Cox — £35
Cox & Cox Square Velvet Cushion. Standard 50×50cm velvet, oat colour. Includes insert. The velvet here is shorter-pile and matter than #3 — works year-round, where the H&M velvet is distinctly autumn/winter.
The budget bargains
A quick note on the two picks below: our IKEA and Primark links aren’t affiliate links — we’ve included them because they’re genuinely good, not because anyone’s paying us.
14. IKEA Sanela Velvet Cushion Cover — IKEA — £10
IKEA Sanela Velvet Cushion Cover. The Sanela in beige is £10, looks £30. Cover only. One of those products where IKEA quietly out-nicens far more expensive competitors.
15. Primark Home Linen-Look Cushion — Primark Home — £8
Primark Home Linen-Look Cushion. Won’t last forever, but at £8 you can afford to replace annually. The cream linen-look is the right colour with a forgivable polyester texture.
How we’d build a sofa with these
For a 2-seater sofa (3 cushions total):
- Cushion 1 (foundation): #4 (Soak & Sleep linen) or #1 (Dunelm rib-knit)
- Cushion 2 (texture contrast): #2 (Cox & Cox bouclé) or #3 (H&M velvet)
- Cushion 3 (statement): #8 (Etsy hand-loomed) or #10 (kantha)
Total: ~£70-90 depending on choices.
For a 3-seater sofa (3-4 cushions):
- All of the above, plus #11 (Dunelm bolster) along the back.
What we’d avoid
- Bright white cushions (they read cold next to warm-nude tones)
- Anything with sequins, beads, or embellishment (looks dated within a year)
- Microfibre velvets under £15 (they pill within months)
- Cushion sets of 4 matching pieces (looks like a hotel)
Closing thought
A cushion is the cheapest reset button in your house. Three new covers and 30 minutes of arranging changes how the sofa feels for nine months. We’d spend £70 here before £700 on a new sofa, every time.
